SKIDS - HOW MUCH FUN DO YOU HAVE AT WORK?
SKIDS’ master franchise opportunity offers financial rewards and fun
A ‘slightly different kind of business’ is now seeking master franchisees with a difference – they must know how to enjoy life. The motto for SKIDS is, ‘how much fun do you have at work?’
SKIDS stands for Safe Kids in Daily Supervision and the company is New Zealand’s largest franchised provider of after-school care, holiday programmes and other services that help ensure that the children of increasingly busy parents are safe and stimulated. SKIDS franchisees can offer before-school sessions involving breakfast and games, after-school sessions with supervised homework time and planned activities, and holiday programmes combining trips, crafts, games, cooking, movies and all sorts of other events to ensure that children of working parents enjoy the holidays, too.
All the programmes are CYFS-approved so parents can access WINZ subsidies and are based in participating schools so that children are generally in familiar surroundings. ‘The result is a business that generates huge loyalty from children and parents alike,’ say franchisors Dawn Engelbrecht and Bev Parsons.
Both Dawn and Bev are former SKIDS franchisees themselves. ‘I have three children,’ explains Dawn, ‘and as a full-time accountant I needed after-school supervision for them. I was so impressed by SKIDS that I ended up buying a franchise, as did Bev, and today we have a wealth of experience to draw on as we help our franchisees grow their own businesses.’
There are already 40 SKIDS franchisees operating in 59 locations from Whangarei to Timaru. Franchisees need no previous experience as all programmes are planned and prepared with the assistance of the franchisor, who also provides support in all areas of business management. ‘Childcare is a growing industry,’ says Dawn. ‘Several franchisees now own more than one site and there is continuing demand for SKIDS programmes throughout the country. We are certainly not running out of children, which is why we are now appointing master franchisees to expand the network, establish additional locations and ensure that quality and service are maintained.
‘We have done all our research and know that we can get our new master franchisees off to a flying start with large, viable territories of their own. Many of the areas already have SKIDS operations and we are convinced that a master will be able to hit the ground running. We are looking for people who have the business acumen needed to make the most of this opportunity.’
Master franchise territories with established SKIDS programmes start at $185,000 +gst, and Dawn and Bev believe that anyone following the system should be able to get their money back within 18 months. ‘To achieve this, people taking on the role need to be prepared to learn and apply the skills and systems we have used to build this franchise so successfully. They will be dealing with schools, their principals, families and children so they need to be organised, efficient and professional.’
In addition to the master franchise opportunity, SKIDS franchises are available from $28,000 +gst. This includes a five year site lease at a school, together with full training and assistance. ‘The only qualification required is to be passionate about children,’ says Dawn. ‘Business or teaching experience is not necessary, but the enjoyment of interaction with children and their parents certainly is.
‘The franchise really is a lifestyle option for many. The hours are not demanding, depending on the sort of programmes required in your own area, and it offers a great deal of flexibility for the working mum.’
And, of course, a great deal of compulsory fun. ‘Both franchisees and master franchisees need to get a real kick out of the business. For masters, there are great financial and personal rewards to be had from building an enthusiastic team of franchisees who love what they do, so if you think you have the right skills and the right attitude, call me,’ Dawn invites. ‘Find out how much fun you can have at work.’
