Hi-tech entrepreneurs demonstrate potential of accounting market as SBA makes entry easy for new franchisees

More-info

Adam Parore is full of news. No sooner has he explained why companies like Banklink and individuals such as Sam Morgan, Craig Winkler and Rod Drury are so significant for the future of accounting, than he outlines all the recent developments at the Small Business Accounting (SBA) franchise.

‘We’ve been making some changes to ensure our franchisees are even better prepared to take advantage of the new opportunities. We had excellent growth last year and are looking at 20% revenue growth across the franchise this year, so we’ve been re-investing. We’ve identified potential new franchise premises in six North and South Island locations, rebuilt the SBA website, we’re getting serious about social marketing and we’ve made a new series of television commercials for the first quarter of next year.

And, most importantly for new franchisees, they now receive an income guarantee of $3,000 a month for the first six months. ‘There’s so much demand for SBA’s services, we want to remove as many barriers as possible for new franchisees to come on board,’ says Adam. ‘You don’t need an accountancy qualification – just bookkeeping, administration or small business experience.’

Accounting Service At A Fraction Of The Price

The reason Adam mentions Banklink, Trade Me founder Sam Morgan, Craig Winkler of MYOB software fame and Rod Drury, founder and CEO of Xero, is their involvement in the ongoing development of online accounting and bookkeeping software. ‘This software plays a key role in helping SBA franchisees provide the same service as an accountancy firm at a fraction of the cost.

Banklink has been the mainstay of the industry since its inception and has grown to be one of New Zealand’s best tech businesses,’ says Adam. ‘More recently, Sam Morgan and Craig Winkler’s investment of millions in Xero, and their appointment as non-executive Xero directors, is hugely significant. These high technology entrepreneurs with their brilliant business minds would not be putting money and time into accounting and software development if they didn’t see huge potential. Whichever way you look at it, their involvement amounts to the highest possible endorsement for the future of the accounting and bookkeeping sector that SBA operates in.’

When Adam purchased the SBA franchise system in 2007, one of his first innovations was a comprehensive upgrade of accounting software used by franchisees. ‘Our online software enables SBA franchisees to, as an example, bring together a client’s bank statements and then use the memorisation function to check incomings against outgoings,’ explains Adam. ‘It’s easy to use, intuitive and can rapidly produce an accurate trial balance which enables the SBA franchisee to provide the client with real-time financial data that helps them make informed decisions.

‘That’s what the software allows us to do now – there’s no telling what functions will be added in the future and how that will enhance the services franchisees can offer. And, of course, we provide full training for franchisees, to keep them up to speed with new techniques, systems and opportunities, both initially and on an ongoing basis. Our new website for franchisees is a bit like Wikipedia for accounting – it contains accumulated wisdom gained over eleven years from over 42 franchisees, hundreds of staff and all sorts of experts, and it’s instantly available to new franchisees.’

Locations Available Instantly

As the need for SBA’s services goes on growing and customer numbers surge towards 15,000, the company is actively targeting expansion by identifying potential areas for expanding then working hard to secure premises that fit the proven SBA profile. ‘We like to be visible and convenient with street level shop frontage and close to either a post office or banks where tradespeople and other owners of small and medium size businesses visit regularly. This way, we save new franchisees time and distractions and enable them to get up and running faster.

‘In Auckland, for example, we have identified premises in Ponsonby and Pakuranga. As different as they are, they both meet our profile: Ponsonby is a fairly eclectic mix with a few corporate people but mostly the self-employed in such industries as advertising, marketing, film, and IT; Pakuranga is more about self-employed tradespeople and small businesses such as engineering firms. What this means is both suburbs have large populations of key SBA clients.

Whangarei is another targeted area, along with Tauranga, Dunedin and Christchurch – where Adam predicts that the rebuild will produce a massive influx of self-employed tradespeople.

SBA franchises in these and other areas are available now, with the franchise fee of $48,000+gst including full training and necessary equipment and, of course, that all-important income guarantee for the first six months.

Adam sums up: ‘Having read this far, you’re aware of the importance the country’s top hi-tech entrepreneurs attach to the future of the accounting sector. You have seen how committed we are to expanding into key areas, and how we will encourage and support new franchisees. You’ve learned how we are growing and attracting new clients. What you do next is up to you. If you feel you have what it takes and see yourself as part of one of New Zealand’s most successful franchises, then seize this opportunity and ring me.’
