Australia names top franchises for 2007

Pack & Send, Worldwide Online Printing and Ella Bache have all been recognised for their outstanding achievements in Australia's prestigious PricewaterhouseCoopers Excellence in Franchising Awards.

There were three sub-category winners in the Franchisor of the Year category, with Pack & Send winning the Retail Franchisor of the Year 2007 title before taking out the overall award. Other category winners were Quest Serviced Apartments (Service Franchisor of the Year) and Gloria Jean's Coffees (Food Franchisor of the Year).

Leaders in logistics services, Pack & Send offers convenient and personalised solutions when sending any item, anywhere. Founded by CEO Michael Paul in 1993, the franchised business services consumers, ebay buyers and sellers, tourists, small businesses and major blue chip organisations including Qantas, Telstra and BHP.

Since its first day of business when the only sale was a $2.90 cardboard box, Pack & Send has become a national retail network in Australia with over 80 franchised retail outlets generating over $24 million with annual growth rates in excess of 20%.

Worldwide Online Printing's Spring Hill and Rowes Arcade (QLD) franchisee Andrew Robertson was also recognised as the Franchisee of the Year. Andrew purchased the Spring Hill franchise of Worldwide in September 2003, and has since increased annual turnover more than four-fold. Under his leadership, staffing has grown from three to fourteen, with employees paid on a salary plus profit-share basis resulting in a positive work culture and low staff turnover.

Australia's first skincare franchise, Ella Baché, was also recognised with one of Australia's youngest CEO's Karen Matthews being named Franchise Woman of the Year. Since joining Ella Baché in 1999, Karen has been instrumental in establishing Ella Bache's position today as Australia's authority on skincare franchising and in January 2007 BRW named Ella Baché among its fastest growing franchises of the year. Over the past three years Ella Baché has a recorded revenue growth of 53.56% and annual store growth of 44.12%, with 71 franchises currently in operation, and solid growth forecasting 50 more in three years.

  • Franchise Media Campaign of the Year: Red Rooster
  • Franchise Innovation Award: John Brennan Hair

Richard Evans, CEO of the Franchise Council of Australia, said franchising provides enormous social capital to Australia. 'The entrepreneurial spirit Australians are renowned for can be found in the many franchisees and franchisors setting best practice standards. The Excellence in Franchising Awards are a high-quality example of successful Australian small business contributing to a $128 billion sector.'
