Award-winning immigrants prove value of franchising

by , last updated on 1st July 2011

If you think it is hard to recruit staff or franchisees at the moment, spare a thought for the businesses of Westport.

According to the Prime Minister’s speech at the 2007 Franchise Awards , when she visited the Work & Income office there recently they advised that unemployment was so low in the area that when employers rang up and asked, ‘Who have you got?’ they would mention a name and get the response, ‘Oh no, not him!’

As Helen Clark said, we’ve now reached the stage where the only people unemployed are those nobody wants to employ – or possibly those who don’t want to work. Good news if you’re planning an election, perhaps, but a real problem for franchisors and franchisees. Perhaps the success of immigrants such as Shiraz Hajee and Jenny Chen in the Franchise Awards in recent years could give the Minister for Immigration pause for thought about the value that franchising can offer immigrants – and vice versa.
