FANZ seeks to extend chairman’s term
by , last updated on 13th July 2010
Franchise Association members are being asked to vote to extend the maximum term for which a Chairman may remain in office from two years to three under a special motion currently before members.
The reason given by FANZ for the proposal is that 'the current clause is considered too restrictive, particularly when an incoming Chairperson may take part of their first year to settle into the role.’
The Chairmen is elected annually by Board members from among their number. The two-year maximum term was set when the Association was founded in 1996 in order to prevent any individual dominating the organisation. Since that time, seven Chairmen have served for two years each and one for a single year only.
Circumstances have changed since the Association was founded in 1996. Originally, the Board comprised 12 members but this number was reduced to 7 in 2007. Some members feel this also has reduced the number of Board members willing or able to take on the Chairman’s role. In addition, while the Association originally operated on the basis of a Chairman donating their time plus a single part-time assistant, FANZ now employs a full-time Executive Director as well as an events manager and an administrator.
The current Chairman is Estelle Logan of V.I.P. Home Services; lawyer David Foster is the current Vice Chairman. Both have been in office for two years.
