The Top 100 list includes some names familiar in New Zealand - 23 of the brands listed already operate here with names such as McDonald's, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC and Burger King all in the top ten. About 20 of the top 100 are in the food business.
The US dominates the list with 85 brands, with second place among the nations shared equally by Canada and Australia, with five brands each. While Canada has the geographic advantage of its proximity to the US, the Australian result demonstrates what can be achieved internationally from this part of the world. In the past ten years or so, the Australian government and Austrade have put considerable support behind the export of Australian franchise systems and the results are clearly starting to show. The five Aussie brands featured are Cartridge World (ranked #27), Pirtek (#33), Bark Busters (#36), Aussie Pet Mobile (#57) and Action Coach (#83). Some Australian observers have suggested that government support was more forthcoming after the franchise sector on that side of the Tasman was regulated in 1998.
Franchise Direct say ‘the list was compiled according to an objective methodology that factored in a range of commercial matters alongside issues of corporate citizenship and best practice.' Franchise Direct considered over 5000 franchises worldwide and examined each franchise's units, revenue and market position. It also weighed in its support and financing for franchisees, as well as its policy regarding environmental and social matters to arrive at its list of the Top 100 Global Franchises.
