celebrating our first TWENTY YEARS

With the publication of our latest issue we’re celebrating 20 years of Franchise New Zealand magazine, as well as 15 years of this website. Our cover story takes a look at the past, present and future of franchising in New Zealand and there’s an opportunity for you to contribute your own memories and insights here.

Franchise New Zealand started in 1992 as a one-off publication but it’s now a magazine, a website, a directory, an email newsletter, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed and a digital magazine. Our aim is to educate people about franchising, make them aware of the opportunities and encourage them to make careful, considered decisions, so make the most of all the free help available via whichever medium most suits you.

To get started, here’s an important article for franchise buyers How to spot a quality franchise and one for people interested in expanding through franchising How to franchise your business.
take time to CHOOSE WISELY

A recent survey found that many New Zealanders felt they hadn't been careful enough before buying their business. Now a news story about the dissatisfied clients of an Auckland consultant is saying exactly the same thing about some franchisors.

In both cases, the phrase ‘buyer beware’ springs to mind. When you buy a business or appoint a consultant, you are making a major decision about your future. Why, then would you not take all possible care to make the right choice? It’s not a time to assume ‘she’ll be right’. Here are some important articles you can read right now to help you avoid disaster.

How to spot a quality franchise

Why use an accountant

Why use a lawyer

Choosing a franchise consultant

How to franchise your business

And here's an article I wrote four years ago: Time to take the con out of consultant.

Helping people find the right franchise business, or the right advisor, is what this website is all about – but we can’t do it for you. There are no guarantees in business, so make sure you do your research before committing yourself.

don't wait for the GOLDEN WEATHER

Two months into 2012 and what happened to summer? We’ve not had the long hot weeks we’re used to, so we’ve had to go out and have fun anyway. So what if we’ve got wet? – at least the rain has been warm.

That same attitude is starting to pervade the business world, too. People accept that the easy days aren’t going to come back any time soon so there’s a new realism in the air that says ‘Just get out there and do it!’ The result is that landlords have revised their expectations and franchisors have revised their business models. The result, in many cases, has been more robust opportunities – if you choose wisely.

A survey from Massey University found that many franchisees felt they hadn't been careful enough before buying their business. Helping people find the right franchise is what this website is all about. You can find out about different franchises in our directory, read profiles of opportunities and find out more about using a lawyer and an accountant. There are still plenty of good franchises available, so don’t wait for summer – take the right advice, choose the right opportunity and commit. Life’s too short to wait for summer.

February 22nd

On this day of sad memories for so many people, we send our love and support to the people of Christchurch and Canterbury. Last Sunday, Simon and Lorraine attended a service in Napier entitled 'A Tale of Two Cathedrals', which told the story of the earthquakes in Napier 1931 and Christchurch 2011. An inspired choice of hymn was, "Our cities cry to you, O God, from out their pain and strife." Kia kaha, Christchurch.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Buying a franchise might be a great way to go into business, but it still has its challenges. After all, it’s not like buying a car that you can sell if you don’t like it, or like finding a new job that you can leave easily. When you buy a franchise, you’re going to be living and breathing the business for the next few years – which is why it’s so important to find something that really suits you.

A new survey from Massey University found that most franchisees felt they hadn't been careful enough before buying their business. If you are looking for a new opportunity, then, it’s worth learning from their experience – and that’s what this website is all about. You can find out about over 250 different franchises in our directory, read profiles of opportunities and franchisees, and find out more about using a lawyer and an accountant. Take the time to check it out – you won’t regret it.

Oh, and you can send for a free copy of Franchise New Zealand magazine, too. Now summer has finally arrived, there's some great advice about finding a business that will provide the lifestyle you want.

can you choose YOUR LIFESTYLE?

Summertime, and the living is easy… as people stop and relax with family and friends at this time of year, it often leads them to think about being their own boss. ‘What I want is a lifestyle business that lets me do what I want, when I want.’ But how realistic is this? In the latest issue of New Zealand’s only dedicated franchise magazine, we examine whether such businesses really exist and how you can find a franchise that delivers what you are looking for. Get your free copy here.

If you're serious about buying a franchise or franchising your own business, it’s vital to take good professional advice, so use this site to find out more about using a lawyer, an accountant or a consultant, too. That way, you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of making the right choice and living your life the way you want.

And may we take this opportunity to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. Our offices will be closed from 21 December to 12 January, but we’ll still be sending out copies of the magazine and forwarding requests during that time.
franchisees are the big winners!

Congratulations to all the winners of the Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards for 2011/2012. At the end of a year when New Zealand has had it tough, it was great to hear some of the real success stories of business. Stories like that of Nigel and Carmeena Heney, who have achieved over 20% growth in their Ashburton café. Like Paper Plus, the franchisee-owned co-operative which has achieved its ambition of becoming the biggest book retailer in the country. And like GroutPro, a franchise system founded in the depths of the recession, which is already expanding into Australia and the UK. Read these and other inspiring stories and see the photos in our Awards report with full results. We also have photos of the Awards' social side.

The franchise model has helped many local businesses to compete successfully within their communities and on the national stage but, as the award-winners demonstrated, success isn’t just the result of being in the right place at the right time – it comes from choosing the right franchise in the first place, and from applying the franchise’s systems well.
on top of the world

Standing in the crowd at the All Blacks victory parade, it was easy to feel the sense not just of joy but of relief, too. New Zealand has had it tough for the last year but the Rugby World Cup has been a real celebration. We have loved the opportunity to welcome visitors and prove our ‘we can do it’ attitude. It’s that determined approach which won us the World Cup final, and it’s that resilience that is helping us bounce back from earthquakes and other disasters.

Over the past few weeks, people have seemed to be more confident about investing in the future again. For many, that means looking at business opportunities and especially franchises. In the latest issue of Franchise New Zealand magazine, we look examples of franchisee resilience in Christchurch; our cover story uses a rugby theme to examine the four essential phases involved in buying a franchise and there’s plenty of helpful advice on everything from training to retail leasing. Send for a free copy now.

While you’re waiting for that to arrive, you can start your research right here. We have details of over 250 NZ franchise opportunities on this website as well as profiles of franchisees and franchises and plenty of advice. Oh, and there's an article on All Blacks who've bought franchises, too!

franchise activity PICKING UP

A lot has been happening in franchising over recent weeks. As business confidence slowly returns, we are getting more requests every day for free copies of Franchise New Zealand magazine. Franchise bankers report that demand for franchise funding is increasing, while brands such as Subway have announced more outlets and Restaurant Brands is even considering bringing Taco Bell to New Zealand.

It was recently confirmed that NZ has more franchises per capita than any other country in the world. We think that’s a good thing, but with so much choice how do you find the opportunity that’s right for you? Well, searching the possibilities by investment level is a good start – there’s no point in dreaming about something you can’t afford. Once you’ve found a likely business, you’ll need to know much it will really cost to set up and how much you can really make. You’ll need professional advice, so use an accountant. And you may need to obtain finance from a franchise-friendly bank.
making sure *YOU MAKE MONEY*

Surveys tell us that the number one reason people want to go into business for themselves is money. They want to increase their income or increase their overall wealth. Whether they’re looking for a ‘man-with-a-van’ business, a café or computer business or even a million dollar restaurant, buying a franchise can help them achieve their goal.

Of course, people buy franchises for other reasons too: to enjoy more flexibility, more freedom, more security and to gain greater control over their lives. But unless they choose a business that can achieve their financial goals, they are going to be unhappy.

So as you look through the opportunities featured on this website and in the free magazine, how do you work out which businesses will be right for you? Well, searching the possibilities by investment level is a good start – there’s no point in dreaming about something you can’t afford.
time to *GET ON WITH IT*

Events in Christchurch and Japan have rightly dominated the news recently. It has been a time that has emphasised the need for people to help and support each other and this rediscovered sense of humanity will sustain Christchurch as it rebuilds. The pride and determination to do so was evident in the video montage that so movingly ended the memorial service in Hagley Park. As one franchisor said recently, ‘After the September quake, people didn’t want to clean up as they waited for assessments to be made. This time, it’s different – everyone wants to get started again and get on with their lives.’

There’s a sense of that in the whole economy, too. People are bored of the recession and, while business confidence still isn’t high, there is an increasing sense of ‘Let’s just get on with it!’ creeping in. That was evident in our recent survey, which found that most people interested in buying a franchise would be prepared to move to another location for the right opportunity. That’s a smart approach: moving could offer you the business you want in the location you want, and even free up the money to make it possible - read more here.
DISASTER SUPPORT KIT* *

Our thoughts go out to everyone in Christchurch today, and to everyone with family, friends, colleagues, franchisees and franchisors in that stricken city. Having been in Napier last weekend for the commemoration of the 1931 earthquake, we are aware that there will be many stories of heroism and it is clear that the emergency services are doing a magnificent job. Thanks to all those other countries that have offered assistance, too.

The Franchise Relationships Institute in Australia recently produced a free Disaster Support Kit to help franchisees hit by the Queensland floods and we thought that it might be helpful to refer you to this. The kit contains tips, strategies and practical guidelines for providing both emotional and business support. There is advice, based on psychological research, on the best ways to help people affected by traumatic events and also things to avoid. It is worth circulating this around your franchise community as everyone tries to come to terms with the earthquake’s impact on the whole of New Zealand. Download this kit for free here. Our article also contains links to other sources of local support.

*why are you here?*

If you’ve landed on this page, you want to find out about franchising – right? You may have come here to research a specific business opportunity or want to know where to start. Whatever the reason, you’ll find everything you need on this site – and it’s all specific to New Zealand. There are articles on everything from buying a franchise to how to franchise your own business. You can find general information about franchising in NZ. Or you can access details of more than 250 different franchises currently available. It’s all free – and you can also send for a free copy of our magazine. If you have a moment, we’ll invite you to answer a few quick questions about your interest in franchising, too, so that we can make this site even better.

But is it a good time to enter franchising? Well, thanks to the continuing economic uncertainty, while some franchises are reporting positive growth others aren’t quite there yet. If you’re looking to take advantage of this low point in the economic cycle to get in at the start of the growth, you’ll need to choose your new business extremely carefully. Fortunately, you’re in the right place – click on the chart below to see what’s next.

franchising *GOES ON GROWING*

Despite the hardships that many businesses have faced over the past two years, the franchise sector is generally in good shape. That's the verdict of the first survey of franchising to be conducted in this country for seven years. The survey found that, despite the recession, the total number of franchised units increased by 5.3% from 2009 to 2010. We’ve been studying the full 124 page report - read our easy-to-read highlights here.

The resilience of franchising is no surprise. Studies conducted during previous recessions have found that franchises tend to fare better than independent businesses during a downturn and come out stronger when recovery begins. That’s because franchisees have the advantage of better buying power, better systems, better training and better support. It doesn’t mean that they won’t suffer set-backs and, as the survey shows, there will still be the occasional failure, but it does mean that if you are looking at buying a business in 2011, choosing a franchise will offer you some huge advantages.

Also appearing on He Whare Pakihi were Simon Lord and Sally Knight of Franchise New Zealand – you can view the programme here.
*FOR YOURSELF* but not by yourself

One of the most famous descriptions of franchising is that you are ‘In business for yourself, but not by yourself.’ After the recent Canterbury earthquakes, we’ve seen that in action. Franchisees in and around Christchurch have banded together to help and support each other, stock has been saved, work has been transferred and we know of at least one case where the general manager of a large franchise organisation flew from Auckland himself to wield a shovel, help with the clean-up operation and see for himself exactly how he could best help his franchisees in the city to deal with their problems.

Franchising is not just about building bigger and better businesses – it’s also about having support when the going gets tough. It’s that support that can make the difference between survival and failure so if you’re thinking about getting into business for yourself, a franchise makes a lot of sense.
go in with your
EYES WIDE OPEN

A recent survey of 345 Australian franchisees found that 20% of respondents admitted that they had no idea of what they were getting into when they bought a franchise. It’s not purely an Australian problem, either; last year, NZ’s Ministry of Economic Development identified people’s failure to take proper professional advice before buying a franchise as a major issue.

Too many people go into franchising with their eyes wide shut, and it can sometimes end in disaster. The need to do your homework properly is a message we at Franchise New Zealand have been pushing since our first magazine was published in 1992. Read about why you must use a lawyer and how an accountant can help.
NZ's Top Franchisee

Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa. The surprise and joy on the face of Bill Sampson when he was named Westpac New Zealand Franchisee of the Year last night was obvious. The Fastway Couriers franchisee from Tauranga had earlier won the Business Services category and his sincere speech of thanks had touched everybody there. When he took the top title the whole room seemed to erupt and he was embraced by every one of the Fastway whanau - Maori and pakeha alike - at his table before making his way to the stage to collect the trophy from the Minister of Commerce. Bill won because he epitomises franchising. He has taken the opportunity that the Fastway franchise offered him and built on it, his wife and children are involved and together they have created a business that has huge customer loyalty. Read more about Bill Sampson and the other 2009 Award winners.
The World's Best Franchises?

A recent survey that listed the world's 100 best franchises includes many names familiar to New Zealanders. Such rankings are worthy attempts at ranking franchises according to a number of criteria. Whether they actually have any real value for franchise buyers is debatable, however, particularly given their international focus - a franchise successful in Europe may struggle here, and vice versa. The franchise awards operated in many countries are often better indicators of a franchise's worth particularly if, as with the New Zealand awards, there is a rigorous judging process. However, while listings attempt to rank all franchises in a sector, awards cover only those who have entered. In truth, the only way to find out which franchise is right for you is to do your own research. We're here to help - read this article to help you work out where your future lies and find lots more advice here .

Mastering Franchising

Many of the best-known franchises in New Zealand have been brought here from overseas by local entrepreneurs or companies who have taken up a national master licence for the brand. This is a very different challenge from buying a franchise. A master licensee needs to be a big thinker and a thorough planner, a team builder and a risk-taker. They will probably have big business experience and have deep pockets - well-established franchise systems don't come cheap. But get it right and it can be incredibly profitable.
In October, some top US franchises are visiting New Zealand to meet potential master licensees here. Johnny Rockets is a fun, family-friendly restaurant chain offering traditional All-American favourites. NexCen Brands has over 1800 outlets worldwide with different brands in the food and footwear sectors.
On The Way Up?

If the best time to get into business is at the start of a recovery, the signs are looking good. Perhaps that's why, as the economic forecasts start to sound less gloomy, we're seeing renewed interest in business opportunities. Statistics from other countries suggest that, as usual, franchising has fared better than other business sectors (see our News section - right). People are certainly interested - by the end of August, we had already received as many requests for copies of Franchise New Zealand magazine as in the whole of last year!

There's no doubt that many existing businesses have suffered in the recession and the impact of reduced demand, redundancies, shorter credit and more bad debts isn't over yet. But for new entrants, it could be a different story with reduced start-up costs and more locations available. Many franchises look set to come out of this recession stronger than ever and the result is a variety of opportunities for those prepared to make a start on creating their own future. Yes, you need to be careful to choose the right opportunity , but as long as you take good advice you'll give yourself every chance of success. Start exploring your options now.

Bright prospects ahead for positive franchises

In the last few days, I have attended the conferences of two different franchises and have been impressed by the mood of the franchisees. They aren't focusing on the recession - they're getting out and getting on with it. There seems to be a feeling that the worst is over, that people have adjusted to the different trading conditions and that opportunities are there for people who have the ability and courage to look for them.

That may increasingly be the case for franchise buyers too. At another event, some franchise bankers told me that they had written a lot of new business over the past month and that the approvals process could be surprisingly quick now. After recent concerns about funding , that's good news for everyone. So if you're feeling the time has come to find out more, start here. Have a look through our directory of opportunities and read some of our business profiles . Then contact the franchises you like and find out more. You might enjoy talking to some positive people again!

Facts Will Show Whether Regulation Deserved

A recent symposium on franchise law suggested that the issue of regulation of the franchise sector is far from closed. Our summary of the papers presented shows that opinion is still very divided on the need and desirability of regulation, not just to protect franchise buyers but also to create a level playing field among those offering franchise opportunities. However, the lack of hard evidence, not just about problems but even about the numbers of franchisors and franchisees operating in this country, makes it difficult for anyone to reach a firm conclusion. An independent survey of franchising that Massey University is planning for next year may provide some of that data.

One interesting statistic from Australia suggests that, while franchises provide for only 5% of all SME's by number, they account for some 50% of SME turnover. If that is true, it not only points to franchising's vital importance to New Zealand's economy but to its efficiency, too. If you're thinking of going into business, you'd be mad to ignore the franchise option.

Government Decides Against Franchise Law

Today's announcement by the Minister of Commerce that there is no case for franchise-specific legislation at this time means that it will be business as usual for franchisors and franchise buyers for the foreseeable future. The business of franchising - and franchise sales - will continue to be governed by normal commercial law, but there will be no requirement that anyone offering franchises for sale must disclose certain standard information or abide by a code of conduct. That requirement is still reserved for voluntary members of the Franchise Association.

The Government's decision means that the franchise sector in New Zealand is safe from the expensive, unwieldy and constantly-changing regulatory regime that exists in Australia - for now, at least. However, it also underlines the fact that franchise buyers must do their own research very thoroughly before making any decision. There's no law that says what a franchisor must tell you, so you have to find out the facts for yourself. Well, you're in the right place to start. Read our advice to buyers here and find experienced lawyers and accountants to help.

Your Decision - Whatever the Law

An Auckland symposium looks set to re-ignite the discussion about the need (or lack of it) for franchising law in New Zealand. The debate hotted up last year after the Keith Lapham affair led to the Ministry of Economic Development publishing a discussion document. The Franchise Association initially stated its support for legislation, later coming out in favour of the status quo after a member survey. The issue has been seized upon by the well-funded Motor Trade Association, which sees franchise regulation as a way of addressing perceived imbalances in its own sector. Franchise lawyers - as opposed to academic lawyers - seem to be split on the issue.
What does this mean for franchise buyers? If overseas experiences are anything to go by, almost nothing. The fact is that buying any business means you must research the opportunity thoroughly before making your decision. No legislation can manage that - it's up to you. Well, you're in the right place to start. Read our advice to buyers here and find experienced lawyers and accountants in our Directory.

Strong Values Mean
High Values

The news that Hell Pizza in New Zealand has returned to its founders should restore some excitement to a fast food sector that has recently been dominated by discussions about sales levels and costings. Hell’s statement that it will lift quality and broaden its range, rather than getting into a price war, makes sense – in a downturn, the strength of the brand is one of the things that helps franchises succeed. Of course, there are plenty of other reasons too - read Is this a good time to buy a franchise? Not that buying a franchise means guaranteed success. Some businesses are performing very well right now while others may have problems. That’s why it’s vital that you research any opportunity thoroughly – we recommend spending an hour for every $1000 you plan to invest. Read our advice to buyers here .
Life as a Franchisee

Becoming a franchisee is a big step. After all the research into various franchises, the advice and the training, there finally comes the crunch point: you open your own doors, get into your van or sit at your desk for the first time - and nothing happens. You realise that it's your business and it's up to you to make it succeed. For most franchisees, it's a time of excitement, fear, energy and nerves. They're all essential ingredients in creating your own future.
But what changes when you're reliant on your own efforts rather than a regular salary? How do the franchisor and other franchisees help? What's it really like? That's what one new franchisee's blog is about - read it here. Many franchises require capital of $50,000 or less to get into business, and actually offer the chance to start small and grow a sizeable business, or to live a different lifestyle. It all depends on what you want and what you choose. In the latest issue of Franchise New Zealand magazine there’s a whole article on what’s available, what to expect, what return to look for and how to grow. You can search opportunities by investment level here .
The magazine also talks to top franchisors to find out what steps they are taking to help franchisees cope with recession. See an extract here. There’s also a review of franchising in the South Island – is it really eight years behind Auckland, as one Mainlander suggests? Send for the free magazine and find out.
