Description
We identify ‘best-fit’ franchisees using psychometric testing and analysis. This strengthens selection decision-making by identifying what drives individual’s performance and their support needs.
Notes
As people and performance specialists with 10 years’ experience, we uncover hidden or potential issues with franchisees, management and staff.
Who Are We?
Selector Limited is a New Zealand business that helps other businesses select and retain the staff and management most likely to perform and succeed. Working with businesses, including franchises, of all sizes for more than 10 years, we have developed our psychometric-based tools and consultancy to help clients make the best selection and people management decisions.
Selector has developed tools that work for New Zealand businesses in their commercial environment. Through our franchise research project we are applying those insights in even more depth to the franchise sector – to find out what makes successful franchisees successful, and what support those who are struggling might need.
How Can We Help?
Selector can help you make the best selection decisions, identifying prospects who can really perform in your business.
Most businesses rely on CVs and interviews when recruiting. But while CVs show prospects’ skills and achievements, they do not reveal what motivates them to work harder, what may trip them up or how they are likely to perform running their own franchise. And while some prospects interview very well, even if they will not be good on the job, other people interview badly, but may have the skills, knowledge and attitudes to excel in your franchise.
To make the best decisions you need to understand what drives your prospects, how they are likely to perform in your franchise and what support they may need to succeed. Psychometric assessment helps you to determine how well a prospect fits your organisation and whether your organisation fits the prospect’s business preferences and ideals.
Selector can provide you with cost-effective psychometric tools that give you real insight into why prospects want to join your organisation, what their expectations are and whether the proposition on offer will actually interest and motivate them to perform.
Psychometric testing sounds difficult to understand. But really, all it’s doing is measuring how people relate to others, what they will pay attention to, what they might pay less attention to, what will motivate them – and applying that to the demands of the job. It’s about ensuring the right fit between the person, role and work culture.
Why Should You Seek Advice?
Franchisors consistently report that finding good franchisees is one of their most frustrating business challenges. The potential cost of a failing franchisee includes damage to your brand, lost market share and legal fees. While you may dream of a perfect world in which you can clone your top franchisees that is not yet possible or legal. So how can you ensure that you select prospects with the potential to be successful?
Our experience and results of a recent study show that identifying whether a franchisee is the right fit for your franchise brand is critical to their future performance. It doesn’t matter how much money your prospective franchisee has, if they are not a good ‘fit’ they will fail! Why sit through two or three interviews, application forms and piles of paper work only to find that your prospect does not have the characteristics your business requires?
Selector can identify whether ability or application, business acumen or operational ability, or any of many other attributes are key factors for success in your franchise. And we can also identify red flags that are commonly found in poorly performing franchisees, which should make you stop and think about whether prospects are suitable.
In one franchise system we have identified that poor performers share a combination of attributes such as failure to see the big picture, a lack of real self-confidence, a tendency to focus intensely on business relationships and become overly involved in the day-to-day business, while wanting total predictability of activities and business flow.
What if one of your prospects is not a big picture viewer, or strategically driven, but desires a high level of autonomy? Is that prospect likely to accept tightly controlled franchise processes? Depending on your franchise, selecting such a person could be a recipe for disaster.
Selector identified one such prospect for a franchisor, who was then presented with two choices: implement a management programme with strong support structures, communication and reporting lines to all parties before the franchisee was accepted; or reject the prospect. Because we had gathered this information from the prospect’s profile, the franchisor could make an informed decision about the resources and investment needed to manage that prospect.
Once you know a prospect’s ‘trip up points’ you can determine the likely cost of bringing this person up to speed and make informed decisions about their impact on your brand. If you accept a prospect knowing what their shortfalls are, you are more likely to be able to effectively manage them. The result is a more successful franchise that will deliver against your expectations and objectives.
