by Simon Lord, last updated on 25th October 2011
Buying a franchise has proved a route into business for many people, including some famous New Zealand names from the rugby world. As the following examples show, it’s not just Super 15 franchises these guys are interested in.

Keven Mealamu
The 2011 Rugby World Cup winner (it feels great to update this article and be able to write that!) is shortly to open a Nando’s franchise in Takanini with his wife, Latai.
Michael Jones
Known as The Iceman for his cool and confident style of play, Michael Jones was a star of the All Black side that first won the 1987 Rugby World Cup for New Zealand. His 55-test career lasted from 1987 to 1998. He is now involved with the family business that has brought the Carl’s Jr burger franchise to New Zealand.
Blair Larsen
Blair Larsen played 17 tests for the All Blacks between 1992 and 1996, including the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He first entered the franchise world with Anchor and has just opened a new outlet of The Pita Pit at Britomart in Auckland.
Eric Rush
Eric Rush played 29 games for the All Blacks between 1992 and 1996 but will best be remembered as one of the world's foremost Sevens rugby players. He captained New Zealand to the World Sevens Series title for six consecutive years and two gold medals at the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games. As a franchisee, he owns the Browns Bay New World supermarket in Auckland’s Browns Bay (very much a South African stronghold).
Carlos Spencer
Recognised as one of New Zealand’s best-ever five-eights, the mercurial Carlos Spencer made a habit of doing the unexpected. He played 35 tests for the All Blacks and made the cover of Franchise New Zealand magazine back in 2004 when he bought an Esquires Coffee Houses franchise. He later sold the business when he moved to play overseas. Fellow All Black Danny Lee, a try scorer against England in his two-test career, was also an Esquires franchisee.
Robin Brooke
Another New World franchisee (he owns the supermarket in his native Warkworth, Robin Brooke played 69 games for the All Blacks between 1992 and 1999. Older brother of Zinzan, Robin scored four tries for New Zealand, all in tests.
Bernie McCahill
Another World Cup winner from 1987, Bernie McCahill played 10 tests for New Zealand between 1987 and 1991. Having experienced life as a franchisee with Jim’s Mowing, he recently bought a half-share in the company’s Auckland regional franchise.
