NZ FRANCHISOR FINALIST IN ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
Franchisor Dawn Engelbrecht of Safe Kids In Daily Supervision (sKids) is one of 12 finalists in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2012 awards.
Dawn was first a customer of the after-school childcare service, then became a franchisee before taking the plunge with her business partner Bev Parsons and buying the whole franchise. Since 2006, the company has grown dramatically with 55 franchisees operating in 90 schools throughout New Zealand. sKids is now launching further afield, in Australia.
An accountant by training, the mother of three recently completed an MBA and was elected on to the board of the Franchise Association in July 2012. sKids has been a multiple winner in the Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards, winning both the Franchise System of the Year and Franchisee of the Year titles in the Lifestyle Services category two years running.
The Entrepreneur of the Year awards programme was created in the United States by Ernst & Young in 1986 to honour entrepreneurs whose ingenuity and perseverance have created and sustained successful, growing business ventures.
It has since expanded to more than 140 cities in 50 countries. The New Zealand winner goes on to represent the country at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Monte Carlo.
Dawn was nominated for the awards by Tara Lorigan of Company of Women, the organisation exclusively for women entrepreneurs, and selected as a finalist. The next stage includes an interview by a panel of judges including Diane Foreman of Emerald Group - another franchisor.
‘I was honoured to be nominated for these awards and to be chosen as a finalist is amazing,’ Dawn told Franchise New Zealand. ‘Ultimately, my success as an entrepreneur is simply a result of the success of the overall sKids family – I just happen to be the head of this amazing body of people that is sKids.’
